Monday, January 11, 2021

Virtual - via Zoom

Present: Mary Jo Deering, Dave Prescott, Cele Garrett, Kathy Pointer, Miriam Kelty, Eriko Kennedy, Carolyn Rourke, Loretta Vitale Saks, Peg Simpson, Denise Snyder, Nadia Taran, and Wendy Zenker.

President Mary Jo Deering called the meeting to order at 3:03pm.

Mary Jo welcomed our new board members and asked each board member to introduce themselves and speak briefly about their interest in being part of the WAVE board.

Officer Reports        There were no formal Recording Secretary, Correspondence Secretary or Treasurer Reports though, in Laurie’s absence, Cele noted the WAVE account balance: $8,856.01.

Election of Officers    Laurie, Dave and Cele have agreed to remain in their positions as Treasurer, Correspondence Secretary, and Recording Secretary, respectively. When Mary Jo recently assumed the position of President, it left the VP position vacant. Kathy Pointer unanimously was elected to this position.

VTVN notes         Mary Jo reported a brief update from VTVN’s Barbara Sullivan. The decision has been made not to hold a conference in the spring. They will put their efforts toward the annual Village Gathering, taking place October 5-7. Mary Jo noted that VTVN and WAVE have a standing agreement where each offers the other a reciprocal membership. And, VTVN has offered their Zoom account to WAVE if we need it for a meeting that attracts more than the 100 attendees that our various village accounts can accommodate.

Discussion of April 19 Conference with Montgomery County Villages          This half day-long conference will take the place of the second quarter WAVE meeting. The focus will be on mature village operations. The board discussed concerns about attendee capacity. We agreed we didn’t want to cap attendance and leave out WAVE members but that we would promote the conference to our usual distribution and not extend the invitation to villages from other parts of the country.

The conference will begin with a brief welcome and a plenary session and Q&A with a small panel. We discussed potential panelists. This will be followed by two sets of concurrent sessions.

WAVE Projects         Mary Jo referred to the handout provided in advance regarding possible initiatives for WAVE. There was discussion about these ideas, including Wendy Zenker’s idea to identify smaller groups of village leaders who might meet together regularly to discuss specific ideas more deeply. Loretta mentioned a small group of villages in the “Route 1 corridor” area that regularly were convening to share ideas. We agreed that there could be great value in making public a potential list of topics to glean interest level in forming such small group. Kathy mentioned the idea of WAVE making available a type of village mentorship program. (Many of our own villages have benefited from such a mentorship that sometimes happens on a more informal basis—particularly when a village is in development and is seeking advice from a village in operation.)

American University village study            Wendy shared that she’d had a conversation at length with an AU professor who is interested in working with area villages on a research project. It was agreed that we would request a proposal from her for the next board meeting.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 4:30pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Cele Garrett

Recording Secretary
