Here is Octorber's update and there is a lot to share this month. Fall is an exciting time in the village world and I hope you will all take some time to carefully review this month's events and announcements. Don't forget to distribute this announcement widely!
1. Villages Milestones:
Greater Stonegate Village is holding their launch event this month! Their board has worked tirelessly to get to this point. Congratulations!
Burning Tree Village is celebrating their 10th Anniversary. This is one of the oldest villages in the county and their leaders were instrumental in the growth of the village movement in our county. Congratulations!
Little Falls Village is celebrating their 5th anniversary this October. They have come a very long way since 2012! Congratulations!
Friends House is celebrating their 50th Anniversary. Their Aging Well With Friends program is new but they have long been around the block…Congratulations!
2. County Website Updates:
We now have a new and improved Resources tab on the county’s website. This web page contains chapters of the Village Guide, documents, presentations, summaries, templates as well as various publications and links. I welcome your feedback, ideas and corrections.
The page has a list of all the villages as well as an interactive map.
3. New Brochure for County’s Transportation Options:
Shawn Brennan, the Montgomery County Mobility Manager has produced a new brochure about the various transportation programs that county residents may be eligible to access. See attached and let me know if you would like hard copies to share with your community.
4. Free Weatherization Help– Habitat for Humanity of Metro Maryland and Washington Gas
There are two separate programs for weatherization: Habitat for Humanity of Metro Maryland has a comprehensive weatherization program for income eligible residents in the county. I am attaching a flyer. Please share with your fellow villagers.
Washington Gas is looking to weatherize homes in the eastern part of the county (especially around Briggs Chaney/White Oak area) and their focus is insolation of doors, windows and weather stripping. Call me for more information on this specific project. As always my contact information is found at the bottom of this page.
5. Equifax Fiasco – Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has Released an Important Announcement:
Millions of Americans have been impacted by the recent Equifax data breach. Whether or not your personal information was stolen, here are a some steps that you can take to protect yourself and your credit.
I highly recommend sharing this link with everyone you know. It contains easy to understand information about what is at stake and the steps people should take to protect themselves.
6. Little Falls Village is Seeking Staff:
Little Falls Village is seeking a new ED. Todd is not leaving the village, only stepping down from the position. Please see attachment for more information and share with suitable candidates.
7. OATS: New community Partner for Technology Education:
Montgomery County has contracted with a wonderful NY based nonprofit called OATS.
They offer FREE classes all over the county and these are a few classes they still have spaces for:
-Computer Basics, Germantown Library: Sept. 11 - Nov. 15: Monday & Wednesday, 10:30am - 11:45am
-iPad Basics, Silver Spring Library, Sept. 12 - Nov. 16: Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30pm - 2:45pm
-iPad Basics, Long Branch Library, Sept. 12 - Nov. 16: Tuesday & Thursday, 1:30pm - 2:45pm

1. Sunday, September 24th, 2-4pm: Hospital Warrior: How to Get The Best Care For Your Loved One
Bannockburn NAN Sunday Series resumes and on Sunday September 24th, they are hosting Bonnie Friedman; who will talk about her book Hospital Warrior: How to Get the Best Care for Your Loved One. It will turn you into a strong advocate and make you ready to take charge! It will inspire you to act with confidence and move mountains for someone that you love. Bonnie Friedman has lived through it 14 times over 24 years, fighting for her husband's wellbeing. Now she's sharing her hard-won wisdom. This event is open to all villages. Please join us. 2. Monday, October 2nd 1-3pm: Montgomery County Villages Meeting
This meeting is designed to help village leaders touch base with each another, as well as share updates and ideas. Due to the large number of villages in the county (ah, what a problem we have!) each village will send one representative to attend. Make sure your village is represented.

3. Thursday, October 5th 11-12:30pm: Suburban Village Ambassador Alliance
There are still spots available for the next Aging in Place Forum on October 5. The event is free and open to all village members, so please share the email and flyer with your networks. During this session, you will have the opportunity to learn about the patient experience from dedicated Suburban staff in the pre-op, clinical decision unit and adult medical departments. All information is in the attached flyer and a registration link is below.

4. Tuesday, October 17th 9-12 noon WAVE Quarterly Meeting
Washington Area Villages Exchange is a consortium of all the villages in DMV area. They meet once a quarter for an educational presentation and networking. Agenda and location information is available at this link.
5. Sunday, October 22nd 2-3:30pm Driverless Cars: Path to the Future
JCC of Greater Washington is hosting this event. This event is featuring Stuart Rosenthal, the publisher of Beacon and his interview with Mobileye’s Director of Policy and Government Affairs. It will also include vision screening and exhibits. To make a reservation contact Debbie Sokobin.
6. Wednesday, October 25th 6-9p pm Olney Home for Life’s Winery and Silent Auction Event
Olney Home for Life is hosing this successful fundraiser event at the Olney Winery for the second year in a row. Please share this with your networks.
7. Saturday, October 28th 10am-1pm East County Village Seniors’ President Recognized at the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women Inc.
Congratulations to Sylvia Saunders who has been working on East County Village Seniors for the past two years and has successfully developed a host of partnerships and connections in the East County Community Center. She will be awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award at the Inspirational Brunch and Silent Auction.
8. Wednesday, November 1st 10-12 noon Aging Well in Our Communities Event in Damascus
A group of residents, faith based organizations and county staff have come together to plan this event in Damascus. We have an amazing panel of speakers moderated by Council member Craig Rice. We will also have time for a community conversation about aging in the Damascus/Clarksburg area. All are invited. Please share with your networks.
